Go Green, Save Green This Year
These days we are all more focused on green, both in our pocketbooks and in terms of the environment. But did you know that it is estimated that between Thanksgiving and the New Year, an extra million tons of waste is generated nationwide each week. The holidays are a challenge with the abundance and overall excess that accompanies this time of year.
It’s a New Year and we need to get our green efforts back on track, so let’s try following these tips and ideas to live and stay green.
Go LED
Lights can be a real drain on your energy bill. Want an easy fix? LED lights use less than 10 percent of the electricity consumed by filament bulbs and can save you huge on your electricity bill.
Wanting a Winter Holiday
Save time, money and stress, plan to stay home for your holiday this year. The money and gas you will save adds up. In fact, I read a report that if every American family reduced their holiday travel gas consumption by just one gallon (about 20 miles) we would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons. So make plans to travel less for your holiday’s or just stay home and relax.
What to do with last years gifts
Many people upgraded their toys, wardrobe and electronics over the holiday. So now you have toys and clothes that you and your family no longer will use and with the way the economy has been this past year most of us have had tighter budgets. So how about donating the unwanted items to a local charity? In addition to ridding yourself of unwanted clutter and keeping extra waste out of landfills, you have the opportunity to make someone else’s day bright. And, your donation may be tax deductible, which means more green for you in the coming year.
Go Green, Save Green
Look for and find ways of living more green this year and start putting it into action.
- Use clean and refillable water bottles
- Use reusable shopping bags
- Change regular light bulbs to florescent bulbs (the one that looks like swirls)
- Use less electricity. (turn off lights, T.V etc when leaving a room)
- Have short showers. NO BATHS!
- wear your clothes more than once
- do laundry only when the washer/dryer is full.
- hang clothes to dry
- ride bikes not cars.
- Adjust your thermostat, in the winter put 2 degrees down and put on a sweater, in the summer put 2 degrees up.
- Use towel not hairdryer.
- Start being paperless.
- turn down the temperature on the water heater a couple degrees
- remember that going green doesn’t have to be huge steps and before you know it you will be doing many more green things then you could have imagined
So whether you are already living green or just joining the movement, these simple steps will help make it easy to be a little more green and put some green in your wallet this coming year.

I have been thinking about being more green but it always sounds like it costs money instead of saving money to me.
